The interior design concept for the library at the Technical University of Moldova (UTM) was focused on creating a flexible, technology-integrated, and highly collaborative environment that moves beyond traditional book storage to function as a Learning Commons or Information Hub.
It blends key elements of Modern University Design, Functional Minimalism, and Industrial-Tech Aesthetics to support the needs of engineering and technical students.
The space is divided into distinct zones to support various learning styles and activities, preventing noise from disrupting focused work (e.g., quiet zones, collaboration zones, media labs).
There is ubiquitous access to power outlets and USB ports integrated directly into tables, floors, and study carrels. High-speed, reliable Wi-Fi is a fundamental design feature, not an afterthought.
Seating and tables are lightweight, movable, and modular, allowing students to quickly reconfigure spaces for individual study, small group discussions, or large review sessions.
High-performance acoustic materials (ceiling panels, carpet, wall treatments) are critical here to absorb noise.
Glass-walled or semi-private group study rooms equipped with large digital screens (for presentations/screen sharing) and whiteboards.
Long, communal tables with built-in data ports and ample space for spreading out large plans or technical drawings.
A neutral base (grays, whites, blacks) is used for a clean, modern feel, accented by bright pops of color (dark blue, the university's main color, or vibrant colors like orange, red, or electric blue) to denote collaborative areas and stimulate activity.
Lighting is layered for both function and atmosphere: bright overhead task lighting for work, and softer ambient lighting in lounge areas. Large windows maximize natural daylight wherever possible.
A dedicated, comfortable zone with soft, residential-style seating (sofas, armchairs) and possibly a small cafe/vending area to provide a relaxed social break space.
Areas designed to showcase student work, university achievements, and new technologies, making the library a dynamic showcase of the university's mission.
